Snorkel owner Michael Diederich, an avid Bitcoiner, decided to show off a low-tech wood fired hot tub at the 2025 Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas. One question was asked hundreds of times as people would run their hands across the smooth cedar staves: “Can it run on Bitcoin?”
Or more precisely, “Can you heat it with bitcoin mining?”
The idea was simple enough to say out loud, but complicated enough to take seriously: a cedar hot tub heated entirely by Bitcoin mining.
Introductions were made, and Justin McAfee (@jusmcafee) and Dane Sjoden (@HashrateHouse) entered the picture along with Hashrate House, a company devoted entirely to turning Bitcoin hashrate into warmth. They weren't just thinking about theory. They were already building and producing other real-world applications.
After the conference, Snorkel sent Dane a tub and a controller. No one knew exactly what shape this would take yet. Snorkel tubs are designed with many forms of heat, including wood fire, gas, and electric heat pumps. Bitcoin mining waste heat is simply waiting to be used for something useful, so why not stack sats from your soak?
By the end of July, they had done it. Our first full prototype was built using Snorkel equipment.
From there, the idea continued progressing to @hashheatpunks in Denver. They are a community of Bitcoiners dedicated to harvesting heat from Bitcoin mining. Snorkel built its first ever hot tub built for bitcoin heat for this year's Heatpunk Summit
